Want to work with me exclusively? Would you read other books by this author? Sometimes you want to avoid telling the ending, or giving away the secrets of the story. If that's the case, the student can share that fact after completing the speech. As promised, I kicked off the first group coaching offering by Productivityist in January. After reading a book, a student completes an index card with information about the book. But some themes are a little harder to figure out. Not always, of course. Another reader, one focusing on the freedom of being away from home for the first time, may read a different theme. How does the story end? In many stories, the theme develops over time, and it isn't until you're well into reading the novel or short story that you fully understand the underlying theme or themes.

What kind of story is it? Understanding Themes A book's theme is the main idea that flows through the narrative and connects the components of the story together. They will usually finish a book and have strong thoughts or feelings about it.

If a student writes to an author who is still alive, you might actually mail the letter. After reading a book, each student shares reactions to the book in a letter written to its author.

Writers can write with no theme in mind, waiting until the first or second draft is complete before determining where the story went, what theme has emerged.

Maybe the author pursues the same theme in every book—the relationship between mothers and daughters is complex. If you've been working on other literary elements with your students -- foreshadowing, personification, or flashbacks, for example -- you might give extra credit to students for pointing out those elements in their books. The newspaper page might include weather reports, an editorial or editorial cartoon, ads, etc. Even better, the bulletin board served as a menu for students who were ravenous for a good read. The questions and answers should provide information that shows the student read the book without giving away the most significant details. What made him change? Themes can be broad or they can focus on a specific notion. Each student creates a "Ten Facts About [book title]" sheet that lists ten facts he or she learned from reading the book. But some themes are a little harder to figure out.
